The Supreme Court’s EPA Decision— Hello American Theology, Goodbye Sweet Holocene
Forget about any confusing lip service given to “Christianity,” the founding tenet of American theology is the following: Everything — children, grandparents, trees, animals, insects, rivers, mountains, community, mental health, human souls, entire cultures, EVEN ENTIRE GEOLOGICAL EPOCHS LIKE THE PRESENT HOLOCENE — can & should be sacrificed on the altar of capital.
The theology dictates: If there is a decision to be made between the worth of capital and the worth of literally (not metaphorically) anything else, it is capital that will be honored.
The creed was written in the planks of the creaking death galleons transporting the kidnapped across the Atlantic, in the shattered remains of plundered Native cities and villages, in the memories of African & Native languages no longer spoken here, written in the towers of buffalo skulls on the Plains, in the asphalt smothering the prairies, in the wooded hills cracking in the rainless heat, in the tobacco-collapsed & coal-collapsed human lungs, the central nervous systems hijacked & broken down by opiates…
And now is the hour of The Final Sacrifice, that of The Living Earth. The hour is come. The god of capital must be served.
